The hike from the beach to Media Luna cone is approximately 5 km/3.2 miles. It is important to take into account that the walk takes at least 3 1/2 hours, round trip. The site is an excellent place to observe Galapagos giant land tortoises in their natural environment.
San Cristóbal island has its own endemic species of land tortoises, Geochelone chatamensis. The Semi-Natural Giant Tortoise Reserve is one of the places where you can visit this emblematic species.
San Cristóbal island is populated by a myriad of endemic animal species among which are: the mockingbird, the lava lizard, one species of geckos, and giant land tortoises. All of these species can be observed during your hike at the Reserve.
The vegetation here is abundant during the rainy season, such as milkweed, trees of palo santo, or holy stick, and matazarno, as well as many species of grasses and herbaceous annuals.
